gPodder updates for Maemo and MeeGo

Via: @Jaffa2

Thomas Perl has updated the v2.x and v3.x gPodder versions for Maemo and MeeGo respectively: The reason why another 2.x release comes out at this point in time is because YouTube downloading was broken by another website change recently, and of course we don't want to leave our good old Maemo users without their daily YouTube video fix. A full list of changes for Maemo 4 and 5 can be found in the 2.20.2 release announcement.

Version 3.3.0 for MeeGo 1.2 Harmattan brings some nice features like download resuming, filters for unfinished files, scroll position improvements and display of the publish date and file size in the shownotes. Of course, 3.3.0 also includes the YouTube download fix. A full list of changes can be found in the 3.3.0 release annoucement.

Maemo 4 users can find the updated version in Extras; Maemo 5 users can find it in Extras-testing (it's awaiting promotion to Extras at the moment). N950 and N9 users can find it at apps.formeego.org or wait for it to pass through Nokia QA.

Gallery plugins for Nokia N9 for visual effects

Via: @Jaffa2

Last week Simón Pena Placer announced the arrival of 3 new gallery plugins for Harmattan to the Nokia Store: The Enlarge & Shrink plugin is an add-on to the built-in Gallery application. You can use it to apply a radial distortion to a picture, so they look like enlarge and shrink effects (also known as punch or pinch). The Face Recognition Reset plugin also behaves as an add-on, but doesn't work on individual images. Instead, it forces the deletion or un/protection of the facerecognition database, something that you might need if for whatever reason the database gets corrupted.

And finally, the Tilt Shift plugin lets you make a picture look as a miniature, by applying the following transformations: Blurring the image using a Gaussian Blur filter; Keep an area of the image focused (either vertically or horizontally); Combine both parts of the image using a Gaussian filter (so the focus is lost gradually from the focused area to the rest of the image); Increase the saturation, so the colors seems those of a miniature.

The plugins are available for free from the Nokia Store.

BackupMenu comes to N9 and N950 (open mode required)

Via: @theshopkeepr

Editor: Ryan Abel

A new update to Rob Simpson BackupMenu utility by Talk user "farfary" brings support for the N9 and N950. BackupMenu allows users to do full backup and restore of the rootfs, home folder, and nitdroid install, and supports backing up to or from USB mass storage.

(The permanent) open mode is required to install MultiBoot and the BackupMenu, so BackupMenu should only be installed if you're willing to give up closed mode.

Instago: Instagram viewer for Harmattan

Editor: Andrew Flegg

Dirk Songuer has scratched an itch, by producing an Instagram viewer for Harmattan. Instagram is a social network focusing on the sharing of photos, and Dirk writes that while I do love my N9 I do miss a couple of applications for it. Some became available since (hi wazzap), but I still miss Instagram for example. Yeah, I know about Molome (and use it actually), but I still prefer Instagrams clean interface and community aspect. So I finally started working on a client myself. It’s called “Instago” and to get right to the elephant in the room: Yes, it’s a simple viewer at the moment. And no, I’m not going to reverse engineer posting images to Instagram nor will I try.

The app is open source, and binary packages are also available; along with a development blog.
